Swimming For Fitness
Do you enjoy swimming as a form of exercise? Swimming is a good all round exercise that will help you stay fit and healthy. Not only does it burn calories, it is great for the heart and it can improve your mood as well. However, if you are not careful you could end up with a swimming pool injury if you do not take care of the muscles in and around your body when you are swimming for fitness.
One of the most important muscles to work is the calf muscle group. Your calf muscles are located in your legs and they help to extend your legs and provide stability when walking or running. If you are not exercising these muscles regularly they will become weak and they may even contract so that they actually pull down on your water shoes. This can result in swimming pools that are uneven and a danger to your safety.
There are many other muscles in your legs that also need to be worked out regularly. Your quadriceps are located in your lower leg and these are responsible for providing you with leg strength and power. Your hamstrings are located in the back of your thighs and these muscles are responsible for providing you with a strong pelvic thrust and stability in your legs. Strengthening these muscles can improve your posture, balance and movement while swimming. Gluteal muscles are located in the hips and these muscles help to keep your legs and stomach muscles operating properly. Strengthening your gluteal muscles can keep you from falling when swimming for fitness.
When you are swimming for fitness, remember that water resistance requires that you use all of your muscles. Therefore, when you are swimming you should concentrate on moving all of your muscles through the water rather than using only one muscle group at a time. If you focus on using just one muscle group, this increases the risk of sustaining an injury. In addition to swimming with proper form, it is also helpful to practice swimming fast. When you swim fast, you increase the amount of time that you will stay underwater, which increases your endurance. Additionally, swimming fast will also help you burn more calories in less time, which is important if you are looking to lose weight or maintain your current weight.
When you are swimming for fitness, it is also recommended that you get used to the water. It is important that you learn how to swim in the pool and learn how to maneuver in the water. As a beginner, you should start out in the pool on a slow swim so that you can get used to the water and learn how the waves affect the water. You should also try to go slower than you would normally swim in the water as well.
Finally, make sure that you warm up and cool down before each swimming session. You should do this every time you go swimming regardless of whether it is for fitness or some other reason. Swimming in the water without properly warming up or cooling down can lead to serious injury and even death. Remember to always stretch beforehand as well, as this will help you to loosen up your muscles. Lastly, make sure that you stay hydrated by taking in enough water or fluids.
